Safety Center

Meeting someone new should feel calm, not risky. This page explains what Sego does to protect you, what it can't do, and exactly how to get help. Parts of it are required by law in several states; all of it is written to be useful.

What we check, and what we don't

Sego does not conduct criminal background screenings on its members.

Every member confirms they are 18 or older. Members verify their identity with a selfie that is compared to their profile photos before they can send a first message; verified profiles show a gold check. Some members choose to add optional trust badges (for example, an ID check performed by a third-party provider, or a background check the member orders about themselves and connects to Sego). A badge means only that the named check was completed on the date shown. Sego never receives or displays the contents of any background report.

Screenings and badges are not foolproof. They may give a false sense of security. They are not a perfect safety solution. Criminals may circumvent even the most sophisticated search technology. Not all criminal records are public in all states, and not all databases are up to date. Only publicly available convictions are included in any screening a member connects, and screenings do not cover other types of convictions or arrests, or convictions from foreign countries. Sego does not exclude members based on the outcome of a screening; the badge simply appears or does not.

Before you meet anyone

  • Never include your last name, email address, home address, phone number, place of work, or any other identifying information in your profile or first messages.
  • Stop communicating with anyone who pressures you for personal or financial information, or who attempts in any way to trick you into revealing it.
  • Never send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or account details to someone you have met online, whatever the story. Messages about money are not allowed on Sego.
  • Be wary of anyone who wants to move the conversation off Sego right away, who cannot meet in person, or whose photos look too polished.
  • Video chat before you meet. It is the quickest way to confirm someone is who they say they are.

When you meet in person

  • Meet in a public place, and stay in public for the first few dates.
  • Tell a friend or family member where you are going and who you are meeting. Share your live location if you can.
  • Arrange your own transportation there and back.
  • Stay sober and keep your drink with you.
  • If something feels off, leave. You never owe anyone an explanation.
  • Any sexual contact without your consent is a crime. If it happens, you can report it to local law enforcement and to us; we will believe you and act.

Reporting a problem

Every profile and every conversation has a menu with Report and Block. Reports are private; the person you report never learns who reported them. Our team reviews every report, usually within a day, and can warn, suspend, or permanently ban a member. Blocking removes the person from your Discover, likes, and messages, and removes you from theirs. You can also write to [email protected].

If you believe a crime has been committed, contact your local police. In an emergency, call 911. If you are experiencing violence or coercion in a relationship, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available at 1-800-799-7233 or thehotline.org. The RAINN National Sexual Assault Hotline is 1-800-656-4673.

Our safety policy

This section is Sego’s written safety policy. It applies to every member, in every state.

  1. Prohibited conduct. Harassment, threats, hate, sexual content or solicitation, requests for money, impersonation, commercial activity, sharing another person’s private information, and any conduct by or toward a minor. See the Community Guidelines.
  2. Screening practices. Sego does not conduct criminal background screenings on its members. Members may optionally connect a self-ordered background check from a third-party provider; Sego stores only whether it was completed and when. Sego does not exclude members based on a screening result.
  3. Identity and age verification. Every member attests to being 18 or older. Members complete a selfie verification compared to their profile photos before messaging. Members may optionally verify a government ID through a third-party provider.
  4. Suspension and removal. We may warn, suspend, or permanently remove a member who violates these rules, with or without notice. A member who is removed is not entitled to a refund. Multiple reports from different members within a short period automatically limit a member’s visibility pending review.
  5. Appeals. A removed member may write to [email protected] within 30 days to request a review. We will respond with a decision; that decision is final.
  6. Notice to members who were contacted. When we ban a member for fraud, we notify, within 24 hours, members who exchanged messages with that person, so they can take precautions.
  7. Reporting. Members report through the in-app Report button on any profile, message, photo, or gathering, or by email to [email protected]. Reports are confidential.
  8. Consent. Any sexual conduct without consent is a crime. We encourage members to report it to law enforcement and to us.
  9. Resources for victims. National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233; RAINN 1-800-656-4673; local law enforcement or 911.
  10. Safety measures. Selfie verification, photo moderation before photos become public, blocking of links and contact details in early messages, automatic blocking of messages about money or payment apps, and human review of every report.
